Main problem:

Soil degradation by conversion of rainforest into agricultural land in Amazonia

Specific obective:

Study of organic matter (OM) breakdown in different forest types

Conditions:

Highly weathered soils
Low soil fertility

Practice:	Consequence:

-slash and burn -monocultures -no cover crops	-rapid leaching of nutrients -decline in SOM -deterioration of soil structure -decreasing production -shift to new areas

Research strategy:

Comparison of a primary rainforest (FLO), with a secondary forest (SEC) and two plantation systems (POC, POA)
